I am going to share with you one of Key West’s best kept secrets that we stumbled upon 3 years ago. This local eatery is the best place near Key West for local seafood! When traveling with young children, you well know that you must be strategic about planning meals, activities, and bathroom breaks! We were planning a day trip to Key West from our campground at Sunshine Key and looked to find a place to eat before getting into Key West for the day.
My criteria included waterfront, outdoor seating, with local fare. The Hogfish Bar & Grill hits all the points! It is certainly off the beaten path, located about a mile off scenic Highway 1, this open-air dining option is on Stock Island in Old Key West. It is in close vicinity to Boyd’s Campground and the location on a fishing wharf is truly unique. Driving in through the neighborhood of well used manufactured homes may cause you to have second thoughts, but the reward is well worth the short detour!
The Joint
The restaurant has a selection of seating areas, the first an open area dining area under a thatch roof. The second, an open air bar leading out onto a deck that overlooks the marina, with additional tables to dine on the water. The grill hosts live music on the weekends. We, however tend only to venture to Key West on the weekdays, so we have not had the opportunity to enjoy this.
The Fare
The food is certainly the real draw! The Hogfish has become an annual tradition for us, but I will admit I always get the same thing. But take a look at the local seafood options on the menu. Check it out here. I love fish tacos and the hogfish tacos here are AMAZING! I I compare all other fish tacos to those at the Hogfish Grill. This restaurant has forever ruined fish tacos for me, as none have measured up since I have tasted these!
My husband always orders the “Killer” Hogfish sandwich, deliciously smothered in swiss cheese with mushrooms. Key West pink shrimp are super yummy and I would sample everything on the menu if I could!
Experiencing new places awakens my soul…wandering makes me feel alive. I am a sucker for the touristy experience loving the glitz and shine, but what truly awakens me are real and cultural experiences. The Hogfish Bar & Grill is real food, real old Keys ambiance…an authentic experience that will bring you back each time you are Key West bound!
